Email Security

Email is still the most common way attackers reach your people, whether through credential phishing, malicious attachments, or business email compromise (BEC) that tricks finance teams into paying fraudulent invoices. Email security from WC1 combines well-tuned filtering, domain authentication, and human reporting workflows for organisations in Singapore and the Philippines.

The problem: why email security matters

Default email security settings let too much through, and attackers constantly adapt with QR-code phishing, links hosted on legitimate cloud services, and conversation hijacking from compromised supplier mailboxes. BEC attacks often contain no malware or links at all.

Many domains still lack enforced DMARC, so anyone can send email that appears to come from you. Staff reports of suspicious emails go to an overloaded inbox and are not analysed quickly.

Who this service is for

Any organisation relying on email, with particular value for finance and procurement teams, organisations that have suffered BEC or phishing incidents, and brands whose domains are spoofed to target customers.

What WC1 delivers

Every engagement is scoped to your environment and risk. These are the building blocks we combine for email security:

  • Email security assessment: Review of gateway and cloud email security configuration, authentication records, and recent threats that reached inboxes.
  • Policy tuning: Hardened anti-phishing, impersonation protection, attachment sandboxing, and URL rewriting settings, tuned to reduce both misses and false positives.
  • DMARC, SPF, and DKIM enforcement: Staged progression to DMARC enforcement across all sending domains, including third-party senders, with reporting.
  • Business email compromise controls: Payment verification procedures, supplier impersonation detection, and mailbox rule monitoring.
  • User reporting and automated triage: A report button and automated analysis that clusters reports and removes malicious emails from all mailboxes.
  • Phishing simulation and awareness: Realistic simulations and targeted training focused on the attack types your organisation actually receives.

How the engagement runs

1. Assess

Review configurations, authentication records, and threat data. Identify quick wins.

2. Harden

Apply policy changes in stages and monitor impact on legitimate mail.

3. Authenticate

Inventory senders, fix SPF and DKIM, and move DMARC to enforcement.

4. Respond

Set up reporting, triage automation, and remediation playbooks.

5. Educate

Run simulations and training, and track reporting rates and time to remediate.

Commercial shape follows the work: a fixed-scope assessment or implementation when the problem is well bounded, or a retainer when you need ongoing operation, tuning, and reporting. Coverage hours, response times, and responsibilities are written into the statement of work so there are no surprises.

Deliverables you can expect

  • Email security assessment report
  • Tuned policy configuration and change log
  • DMARC enforcement plan and reporting
  • BEC payment verification procedure
  • Report-phish triage and remediation workflow
  • Simulation programme and awareness metrics

Platforms and tools we integrate

We configure Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Proofpoint, Mimecast, Fortinet FortiMail, Palo Alto Networks email security capabilities, Check Point Harmony Email and Collaboration, and Google Workspace security, plus DMARC reporting platforms. Cisco environments are covered too, including Cisco Secure Email.

WC1 is vendor-neutral: we integrate the platforms you already own before recommending anything new. Naming a product here describes technology we work with; it does not imply a partnership, reseller agreement, or vendor certification.

Singapore: regulatory and market relevance

Singapore organisations are encouraged by CSA and IMDA to adopt DMARC, and government domains use it widely. MAS expects financial institutions to protect customers from phishing, and the Shared Responsibility Framework adds duties related to phishing scams. BEC losses also create PDPA exposure when invoices or personal data are misdirected.

Philippines: regulatory and market relevance

Philippine banks and e-wallets are frequent phishing targets, and AFASA requires institutions to take reasonable measures against social engineering. BSP Circular 982 covers email and messaging security. For organisations handling personal data, misdirected emails and compromised mailboxes are common breach causes that trigger NPC notification obligations.

How this fits the rest of your security programme

Email Security rarely stands alone. It works best alongside Phishing Detection and Takedown, Digital Risk and Brand Protection, Identity Security and Access Management, Data Security and DLP. See the full catalogue on our Cybersecurity services page.

Frequently asked questions

What is DMARC and why does it matter?

DMARC tells receiving mail servers what to do with email that fails authentication for your domain. At enforcement, it stops attackers from sending email that appears to come from your exact domain.

Will moving to DMARC enforcement break legitimate email?

Not if done in stages. We inventory all legitimate senders, fix their authentication, and monitor reports before moving from monitoring to quarantine to reject.

Is Microsoft 365 built-in security enough?

It can be strong when properly configured and licensed. Many tenants run default settings, so tuning often delivers big gains before any new purchase.

How do you stop business email compromise?

Through a mix of technical controls, such as impersonation detection and mailbox rule monitoring, and process controls, such as out-of-band payment verification.

Do phishing simulations really help?

They help when realistic, frequent, and paired with quick feedback and easy reporting. The goal is faster reporting, not shaming clicks.
