Data Security and DLP

Sensitive data now lives everywhere: laptops, email, SaaS applications, cloud storage, and increasingly in AI assistants. Data loss prevention and wider data security controls help you find that data, classify it, and stop it from leaving through the wrong channel. WC1 helps Singapore and Philippine organisations build data security programmes that protect personal and confidential data without blocking legitimate work.

The problem: why data security and DLP matters

Organisations rarely know where all their personal data and confidential information sits. Customer lists travel by email, files are shared publicly by link, and staff paste sensitive content into generative AI tools.

DLP projects often fail because they start with blocking rules that frustrate users and generate false positives, and are then quietly switched to monitor-only. Data protection laws, meanwhile, hold organisations accountable for breaches regardless of the channel.

Who this service is for

Organisations handling personal data at scale, such as banks, insurers, healthcare providers, retailers, and BPOs, as well as those protecting intellectual property, preparing for generative AI rollouts, or responding to regulator findings.

What WC1 delivers

Every engagement is scoped to your environment and risk. These are the building blocks we combine for data security and DLP:

  • Data discovery and classification: Scanning of file shares, SharePoint and OneDrive, cloud storage, and databases to locate sensitive data, and a practical classification scheme.
  • Sensitivity labelling: User-friendly and automated labels that drive encryption, access, and handling rules across Office documents and email.
  • DLP policy design and rollout: Policies for endpoints, email, web, SaaS, and cloud, starting with monitoring and user coaching before selective blocking.
  • Data access governance: Identification of over-shared data and excessive permissions, and clean-up of public links and stale access.
  • Generative AI data controls: Controls over what data can be used in AI assistants and third-party AI tools, including readiness checks before enterprise AI rollouts.
  • Encryption and key management: Encryption at rest and in transit, with key management aligned to regulatory expectations.

How the engagement runs

1. Discover

Identify data types, locations, flows, and regulatory obligations.

2. Classify

Agree a simple classification scheme and apply labels, starting with automated high-confidence rules.

3. Monitor

Deploy DLP in monitoring mode, analyse incidents, and tune policies with business input.

4. Enforce

Move high-confidence policies to blocking with user override and justification where appropriate.

5. Govern

Establish incident handling, reporting, and periodic review of policies and access.

Commercial shape follows the work: a fixed-scope assessment or implementation when the problem is well bounded, or a retainer when you need ongoing operation, tuning, and reporting. Coverage hours, response times, and responsibilities are written into the statement of work so there are no surprises.

Deliverables you can expect

  • Data inventory and data flow map
  • Classification scheme and labelling policy
  • DLP policy set with tuning records
  • Over-sharing and access clean-up report
  • Generative AI data usage controls
  • DLP incident handling procedure

Platforms and tools we integrate

We implement Microsoft Purview Information Protection and DLP, Palo Alto Networks Enterprise DLP, Fortinet FortiDLP, Netskope and Zscaler data protection, Varonis for data access governance, and cloud-native encryption and key management services on AWS, Azure, and GCP.

WC1 is vendor-neutral: we integrate the platforms you already own before recommending anything new. Naming a product here describes technology we work with; it does not imply a partnership, reseller agreement, or vendor certification.

Singapore: regulatory and market relevance

The PDPA’s Protection Obligation requires reasonable security arrangements for personal data, and the PDPC has taken enforcement action for inadequate controls such as unprotected files and email errors. The MAS TRM Guidelines require data loss prevention and data security measures for financial institutions. IM8 sets data classification and handling rules for government data, and vendors handling government data must follow them.

Philippines: regulatory and market relevance

The Data Privacy Act of 2012 and NPC Circular 2023-06 on security of personal data require organisational, physical, and technical measures, including controls to prevent unauthorised disclosure. BSP Circular 982 covers data protection for banks. For Philippine BPO and shared services operators handling foreign clients’ data, strong DLP is also a commercial requirement.

How this fits the rest of your security programme

Data Security and DLP rarely stands alone. It works best alongside Identity Security and Access Management, AI Security, Email Security, Cybersecurity Compliance and Advisory. It also connects to our Private AI in Singapore services. See the full catalogue on our Cybersecurity services page.

Frequently asked questions

Will DLP block people from doing their jobs?

Not if it is rolled out properly. We start in monitoring mode, coach users with policy tips, and block only high-confidence, high-risk actions, with justified overrides where appropriate.

Where should we start with data classification?

With a simple scheme of three or four levels and automated labelling for obvious sensitive data such as NRIC, passport, and payment card numbers, rather than asking users to label everything manually.

Can DLP control what staff put into AI tools?

Yes. Modern DLP and SSE tools can monitor and restrict sensitive data in generative AI prompts and uploads, and enterprise AI platforms can respect sensitivity labels.

Does DLP help with PDPA or Data Privacy Act compliance?

It supports the security obligations in both laws by reducing the chance of unauthorised disclosure and providing evidence of controls.

How long does a DLP rollout take?

A phased rollout typically starts showing value within weeks in monitoring mode, with enforcement expanding over subsequent months.
